Idéen bag at inkludere samlekort i cigaretpakker stammer helt tilbage fra 1880’erne. I datidens cigaretpakker blev der puttet et stykke karton el. lign. i cigaretpakkerne for at beskytte cigaretterne mod at blive bøjet og knække. En eller anden fik den idé at denne stiffener lige så godt kunne bruges til lidt reklame, og lidt senere samlekort.
I begyndelsen af 1900-tallet blev disse cigaretkort ganske populære, og der udkom serier med sportsfolk, der også inkluderede tidens boksere.
Ikke overraskende var det de mest populære boksere, som hyppigst kom med i disse serier af cigaretkort, og fortrinsvist de boksere, som gjorde sig bemærket i USA. Af danske boksere er det naturligvis Battling Nelson, som oftest er at finde på cigaretkort, men det er også muligt at finde andre danskere i nogle af serierne.
Værdien af boksekort kommer slet ikke i nærheden af de meget populære baseballkort, men der nogle få som kræver et greb i tegnebogen, hvis man vil have dem i samlingen.
